Day 2 –( 30/05) Lae, Wau
Early this morning we will visit the Lae War Cemetery before commencing the drive to Wau. We travel over a very rough road on the way seeing all the old gold mining dredges, taking a detour to visit the gold mining town of Bulolo. All going to plan we should arrive in Wau early to mid afternoon. After lunch the group will be taken on a tour around the district of Wau. Guest House Accommodation (Meals: LD)
Day 3 – (31/05) Wau, Banis Donki
Rising at 4:30am leaving no later than 5:30am by road to the start of the track, which is approximately a 1½ drive. We will walk to the Grey Ghost an American B17 Bomber, which crashed during WW11 in the hills approximately 1hours walk from the start if the track. This plane is in excellent condition and well worth taking the time to go and have a look at.For the next 2½ hours we trek through Kunai grass. It is a steady incline all the way to the rain forest canopy. It is an easy walk under the canopy to our first break at a clearing called Banis Donki. From here it is approximately 1 hour walking to our camp site for the evening. Arrive at the campsite early to mid afternoon. This often varies depending on the time we start trekking and how much time group spends at the bomber. Bush Camp Tent Accommodation (Meals: BLD)
Day 4 –(01/06) Banis Donki, Skindiwai Village
Today there are river crossings and gorges to be negotiated. Always take care and concentrate. We star walking by 6:30am along the contours of the hills, although still flat it is difficult due to the angle of the track. At around 1 pm we start climbing steadily up to Skindiwai Village. Groups can expect to be arriving at Skindiwai early to mid afternoon. This village is extremely small and not often occupied as the people go out panning for gold. Should be in Skindiwai 2pm latest. After the group has set up camp they can go and visit ammunition pits and another plane wreckage. Bush Camp Tent Accommodation (Meals: BLD)
Day 5 –(02/06) Skindiwai Village, Gaudagasul
The trekking today is very pretty, and should see lots of interesting flora and fauna. The track is a lot harder than yesterday. Again we follow the contour of the hills all day. There are no flat areas to get any relief. Trekkers have to take extreme care in places, as there are share drops off the track. Extremely dangerous if one was to slip. It is normal for us to use ropes to cross a number of narrow river gorges. Apart from it being a hard day physically the scenery today is spectacular. There is a steep ½ hour climb up into the village and we would normally arrive at Gaudagasul around 2-3pm. This is a lovely little village where the people are extremely hospitable. Traditional Guest House Accommodation/Tenting if you prefer. (Meals:BLD)
Day 6 –(03/06) Gaudagasul Village, Mubo Village
On Black Cat the weather is normally wet or wetter. Expect rain most days and nights. This morning we commence for 1 hour walk down a steep hill to the Betoie River. We cross this river many, many times. It can be very swift and deep in places and would be extremely dangerous during the rainy season. Even during the dry we have had to wait several hours on occasion for the river to subside before we can commence the crossings. Mubo is a large village with a school and health center. A very pretty village. WW11 history surrounding this village is compelling. The WW11 artifacts lying around the perimeter is prolific. Groups will see far more than what trekkers get to see on Kokoda. It is still untouched. If the river is behaving the group will arrive in Mubo Village around mid to late morning. This afternoon will be spent with the villagers visiting the various WW11 sites. Traditional Guest House Accommodation/Tenting if you prefer. (Meals: BLD)
Day 7 –(04/06) Mubo Village, Kaimutum Village
This morning is spent cris crossing river beds. Difficult walking, over river rocks and stones. The jungle has now changed, it is more sparse and starting to walk through large areas of Kunai grass. Lunch is by the river where we are able to spread out for a change and go for a swim. It is very pleasant. Plus we normally have lots of villagers (and dogs) walking with us. The afternoon commences walking along the riverbed another hour before starting to ascend up into the abandoned Nui Camp. From here we have another 3 hours trekking along ridges and out in the open down into Kaimutum Village. This village is delightful and our accommodation very nice. Traditional Guest House Accommodation (Meals: BLD)
Day 8 –(05/06) Kaimutum Village, Salamaua,
- Lae, Port Moresby, PX107 10:00 19:50
This morning it is a pleasant stroll down to the banks of the Francisco River where we meet our rafts. We spend the next couple of hours slowly floating down the river enjoying the peace and quiet of the river and watching the prolific bird life. On reaching the ocean we disembark our rafts and are now in one of the most beautiful places in Papua New Guinea. Salamaua Beach is what you dream a South Pacific Island is like. On arrival in Salamaua we walk down the beach to meet connect with our boat to transfer back to Lae. Late lunch at the Lae Yacht Club before transferring to Nadzab airport to connect with Port Moresby flight. Hotel Accommodation (Meals: B)
Day 9 – (06/06) Depart Port Moresby
