MOUNT WILHELM to MADANG
OUR SUMMIT TO SEA TREK
Elevation: 3000 metres (9000 ft), down to sea level.
Location: Chimbu and Madang Provinces
This unique track is through remote areas of Papuan New Guinea, offering a rare opportunity to be a part of a truly Papua New Guinean cultural experience.
The people are friendly and so are their pigs. We see remote bush material houses that appear to be suspended from the sky as they are built on such steep terrain. The rain forest is spectacular with butterflies, birds, raging rivers and amazing waterfalls. At night the fireflies appear like little torches flitting around the sky and the bush comes alive with the noises of insects and animals.
It normally takes 3 – 4 days to complete. The days are long but reasonably easy, walking along a dirt track with the odd excitement of a river crossing, sometimes on rocks, sometimes on bridges. People of all ages can walk this track. A medium level of fitness is expected.
We stay the first night in a traditional Highland Village. Sleeping in the “Man” haus. If we are fortunate, the local people will perform a “sing sing” cultural dance. The next two nights we stay in Catholic Missions and our hosts are always very appreciative of our company.
Best months to walk are during the dry season from April through to November when the weather is more settled. We do treks during the rainy season for those walkers who like to trek in the rain. This adds another perspective to the beautiful scenery which is encountered plus makes for some interesting river crossings.
