Kokoda Taster - Imita Ridge

IMITA RIDGE DAY WALK - Kokoda Taster

Goldie River

This walk can be booked at any time by interested trekkers. Please email us to organise. The best time of year to walk up to Imita Ridge is is between the months of May and October. This trek will take all day. 4 hours up onto the Ridge and 3-4 hour back to Owers Corner.

This walk requires a high level of fittness. Good trekking boots must be warn as this is a very muddy trek and accessable only by 4WD.

By 16 September, after more troops had come forward from Port Moresby and dug into a defensive position at Imita Ridge, the Japanese were exhausted. They had been forced to fight hard to cross the mountains and had run out of many supplies. Following setbacks on other battlefields against Australian and American forces, which robbed them of further reinforcements, the Japanese on the Kokoda Track were ordered to withdraw. As Australian patrols pushed forward of Imita Ridge on 28 September, they found that the enemy had slipped away. The Australian dragged the 25 pounder mountain gun up the famous Golden Stair Case onto Imita Ridge and for the first time during the Kokoda campaign were able to shell the Japanese dug in on Ioribaiwai Ridge with heavy artillary. Unfortunately the stairs are now no longer visible having rotted away many years ago. The actual track we take today does not follow the original "Golden Stairs".The actual WW11 track is located further to the west of the track today.

Trekkers must leave Port Moresby by 5am at the latest and depending on road conditions arrive at Owers Corner and be walking by 7am.

Owers Corner is at 850m,  trekkers will make a steep descent down to Goldie River at 420m taking around 45 minutes. Please take boots and socks off to cross the 25m wide river. From here it is a steady to steep climb up to Goodwater Camp site. This is one of the campsites that we stay at on our Kokoda Treks. Is very pretty with a great swimming hole. From here it is a very steep climb up onto Imita Ridge at 850m. It can be very cool on the Ridge and and views across to Ioribaiwa Ridge are sometimes obscured by cloud and mist.

                                                  Imita Ridge Trail

On the return it is a steady descent back down to Goldie River where once again please take shoes and socks off to cross the river. From here its a a very steep climb out to Owers Corner. Arriving back to your parked vehicles late afternoon.
